Sergio Mitre has been traded to the Milwaukee Brewers today for outfielder Chris Dickerson. Mitre was a long shot for a starting rotation spot this spring but was looking to remain on the Yankees roster in long relief. But the front office decided to swap him and make room for both Bartolo Colon and Freddy Garcia. It still hasn’t been announced which of the two veterans will get the 5th spot behind sophomore, Ivan Nova, but the NYC media seems to think Colon’s March performance won him the spot. If what they say is true, Freddy Garcia, the more durable and sensible pick for 5th starter, will become the long-relief man a.k.a the guy that comes in when Colon inevitably gets rocked. Only time will tell.
Dickerson played 3 seasons (2008-2010) with the Reds, splitting time between Cincinnati and their farm system playing only 173 games before finishing the 2010 season in Milwaukee. The 28-year-old has hit .267 in 454 at-bats, with 8 HR and 35 RBI.
