The Yankees lost only their second series of the season yesterday, dropping another day-game to the Tigers and getting walloped with their Ace on the hill. CC Sabathia looked mediocre at best allowing 6 ER in 6 Innings and was given no support as the Yankees went on to lose 6-0.
A lot of people are talking about Javier Vazquez’s performance on Wednesday afternoon as the only shining moment of the Yankees disappointing series. While I’m happy that the struggling Vazquez only allowed 2 runs through 7 innings, I think the shining moment came from Phil Hughes winning his 5th game of the season. Hughes went 7 innings himself striking out 8, walking only 1, and allowing no runs to remain undefeated and lower his ERA to 1.38.
You can’t help but be impressed with how Phil Hughes’ performance manages to make Pettitte (4-0 2.08 ERA, very impressive for the old fella) second best. At the moment Hughes has the American League’s lowest ERA, is tied for the AL lead in Wins, and allows the least amount of hits per 9 innings. It is way too early to even start this conversation but, he is the hands down leader for the Cy Young in the AL at the moment and is on the road to starting the All-Star Game.
Hughes’ confidence is at an all time high and you can see it with how he finishes off batters inning after inning. He is making a mockery of the conversation had by all earlier in the year when fans, coaches, and front office people couldn’t figure out if he should start or not. He has me choking on my socks trying to remove my foot from my mouth for even thinking about putting him in the bullpen, and is making Girardi look better than he did when he suggested Jeter lead off and Damon hit second last year.
In a series when your fill-in starter loses a tight one, your Ace gets smacked around, and your struggling number 4 guy plays well and still loses, you have to look at the things that went well; Phil Hughes. It’s not a coincidence that the only game they won in Detroit was the game he started. Has New York ever been this excited for their 5th man in the rotation to start? I’m not sure, but as a fan I can’t tell you the last time I was looking at the newspaper, counting down the days until the Yanks number 5 guy is scheduled to start.
The Yankees offense, which is normally alive and well, was sorely missing in Detroit with the exception of Brett Gardner and Nick Swisher. While it seems to be a collective slump I can’t help but focus on A-Rod and his lack of power. There are few things I enjoy watching in the world of sports more than A-Rod completely shellacking a ball to left field. But for some reason he only has 3 home runs this far into the season. What could it be? I say that maybe we need to look into Kate Hudson and her magical…flower.
Rumors are ramped in New York about A-Rod and his famous blonde lovers. I could care less about whom he is shacking up with, unless of course that someone has wizard-like powers in her genitals.
I think its hard for anyone to argue that Kate Hudson must have a magical muffin considering A-Rod’s performance last year while they were dating, I mean her presence made A-Rod king of New York for a couple of weeks. A-ROD king of NY?!?! I know, I know, hard to believe. But considering he won two MVP’s without Kate Hudson and New York still didn’t show him any love, I have to believe there is something behind Kate Hudson and her…behind.
It could be a stretch but until you prove me wrong, I’m sticking with my conspiracy theory.
Burnett takes the hill against the Twins tonight; let’s hope he can bounce back from his atrocious outing in Boston.
And I’ll keep my fingers crossed that Kate Hudson is uncomfortably close to the field with her big sunglasses and magical vagina.
