Looks like I spoke to soon. The news that had leaked yesterday from espn.com’s Buster Olney was false. While Andy Pettitte has made it known that he want to return in 2010 as a Yankee, and Cashman has told reporters that he would like to keep Pettitte, the details of the deal haven’t been worked out and therefore no deal has been made
The New York Daily News reported this morning that Pettitte would not be turned off by a 1-year offer just as Cashman realizes that the $5M contract (that was more than doubled by performance bonuses) that he offered the lefty last winter won’t be near enough this season. Although it seems as if there shouldn’t be any problems everyone knows that money in involved and will obviously play a factor if this deal delays.
Sorry to speak to soon but I couldn’t help but get excited by the thought of Pettitte signing on for another year or two. I will keep you posted and announce once this deal is final.
