Gear Up For Yankees Baseball

Melky’s Cycle, Upcoming Boston Series, Halladay Tonight

New York Yankees Melky Cabrera homers against the Chicago White Sox

It was exciting to watch Melky Cabrera hit for the Cycle on Sunday but I can’t help but wonder to myself if it would have been as exciting for Melky if he’d hit a second double rather than a single. The Cycle wouldn’t have been complete but wouldn’t you rather a double? I mean if you had the choice why not? It’s better isn’t it? Yet something tells me if he would have hit a second double, the idiots on TV would have talked like he failed to hit the Cycle rather than succeeded to get 4 extra base hits in a game.

Even if you’re a person who isn’t easily impressed by the Cycle you have to admit he did it in an exciting way—tripling in his final at-bat. Melky was the definite star of Sunday’s game. Especially considering the painfully average performance by CC (7.0 IP 5R 5ER) who lately hasn’t looked like the big money pitcher he is supposed to be. Although CC is finding a way to make it to the 7th inning, I’d like to see him live up to the hype a little more. He has given us strings of great games to watch but hasn’t been lights out (maybe he has twice) and has looked frighteningly hittable. I can at least take solace in knowing that he takes responsibility for his poor performances. He blames nobody but himself; which is refreshing to hear as a sports fan and writer.

The Yankees, however, were anything but mediocre from behind the plate and it wasn’t just Melky. Each player in the starting line-up recorded a hit and either scored or knocked in a run if not both. The Yankees consistently produce offensive numbers like this as a team, giving opposing pitchers no time to relax. When they hit as a team like this they win without much hesitation. It’s fun to watch.

Joe Girardi and the pitching staff have decided to stagger the starting rotation this week using the day off to make sure Sergio Mitre doesn’t make a start versus Boston. Better than that they calmed the Joba worries and gave him an extra three days rest, yet helped his confidence by letting him start the first game of the BoSox series. He has been arguably the most impressive Yankee starter as of late and they’re hoping he brings that fire against their division foes Thursday night.

But before they return home to host the most anticipated series of the season so far (for some), they have to head to Canada and face Halladay. They’ll be trying to prove signing him would have been a mistake tonight as the best pitcher in baseball faces off against Andy Pettitte, who has had some great starts his past few outings but can’t seem to get the W. In his past three starts combined he has only allowed 6 earned runs. His cutter has been crisp and he has looked solid but due to some unfortunate breaks, has been handed numerous no-decisions. He should put an end to that tonight and pick up the win he’s been looking for. If the Yankees can figure out a way to beat Halladay tonight then the stars will align for some great results come this weekend.

With the day off and not much going on I managed to explore some non-pertinent Yankees news. Thanks to my father, I came across some bittersweet photos of the Old Yankee Stadium. The photos show the stadium as it looks today, gutted and earthy. Click Here and you’ll see what I mean.
