Gear Up For Yankees Baseball

Yankees Looked Depressing: Mets Could be the Prozac

Not since 1933 has the Yankee-Red Sox rivalry been greeted with such a streak. The Bombers seemed defused as they dropped their 8th in a row to the Sawks last night in Fenway (in ’33 the Yankees won the first 9 against the sox and in the 1912 season the Sox won the first 14). The most talked about rivalry in sports has been considered an evenly match series, yet has looked anything but so far this season. The Red Sox have seemed to raise the bar to an unreachable level causing the Yankees to look like a chubby toddler trying to grab the big kid monkey bars. It’s been hard to watch.

MLB: APR 22 Athletics at Yankees

Last night was the epitome of a disappointment as the Yankees managed to lose despite a powerful outing by their star off-season acquisition and a big, late game, 2 out hit by their all-star cover boy. Now I know on paper it looks as if CC could have pitched better but I happen to think he deserved a little help from his bullpen. Aceves came in looking like a Boston player in disguise giving up two big hits in a BIG situation without resembling a pitcher confident in his stuff. I was happy to see Aceves take the mound but was unfortunately happier to see him leave. Bruney please come back soon.

The offense finally came alive for a short stint last night but it was about 2 games and 7 innings too late. With Teixeira the exception to the rule the Yankees seemed to have been playing a fun little game separate from the one we were watching on TV: “Blueballs” the game where no one gets passed second base. I guess it was just a matter of time before the red-hot bats started to cool off; it’s just unfortunate it had to happen versus the Sawks for three games in a row. I feel like a disappointed father–they know what they did wrong so they better fix it soon and I don’t want to talk about it again.

With the Mets coming to the stadium Friday night it is no time to relax or mull over the disgraceful play of the last few nights. The Mets are injury ridden but they are still winning ball games—a pretty good number of ‘em too. Make no mistake; they’ll have no problem continuing the Yankee’s losing streak if Bronx boys don’t pick up their game tonight.   The good news for the Yankees is they have the higher end of their rotation coming up when it comes to winning percentage. Joba takes the mound tonight at 3-1 and Andy will try for his seventh win of the season on Saturday afternoon. The scary part of season will come Sunday when arguably the best pitch in Baseball, Johan Santana, will go up against AJ Burnett, who needs a solid start as bad as Swisher needs a base running lesson. AJ needs to lower his 4.89 ERA and a Sunday afternoon game where the weather is looking to be 80˚ and sunny might just be the time to do so.

The Mets just dropped 2 of 3 to the Phils and would love to spring back with a subway series victory. They’ve had great confidence in Livan and have provided him with some pretty good run support despite all their injuries. David Wright has really been playing great baseball hitting an impressive .362 with 35 RBI’s, so we have to watch out for his consistent bat and you better believe Sheffield is going to want to try his hardest to take advantage of homer happy Yankee Stadium, even though he hits from the other side of the plate.   If the Yankees want to get back on track and return to their winning ways they are going to have to come up with timely hitting early in the game and if not early at least before K-Rod comes in. K-Rod has had an incredible first couple of months with an ERA below one, no losses and 16 saves. If the Yankees wind up down late in the game it’ll be hard for Yankee fans to not think about the Armando Benitez days but beware; K-Rod is no Armando and for the Met fans out there I’m sorry for even mentioning their names in the same sentence.

Armando Benitez #49

For some reason people love this rivalry. I personally could care less and think of it as if the Yankees were playing the Astros or the Reds. It’s the “Subway Series” but it’s really just a couple of interleague games. It’s bogus hype that for some reason many New York baseball fans buy into. It was cool to watch them play in a World Series against each other but besides that it’s a rivalry that was started by the money hungry MLB that got lucky with the 2000 World Series. Maybe I’m just a bias Yankees fan with a diehard Met fan for a father who wants his in-home tension to remain low, but really I just think it’s a reason for kids from Queens to get into barroom brawls.

The Yankees need to win this series not because the Mets are the Mets but because the Mets are a good team. The Yankees haven’t really beaten many good teams with any serious strength, unless you consider buying into Texas Rangers hype. They need to beat a quality team and recover from a terrible series; the fact that it’s the Mets shouldn’t really make a difference to them. I realize I’m playing party-pooper to the subway series fanatics but I’m trying to think baseball here and not bleacher fights and chants.

It was a depressing few days for the Yankee Kingdom but the Yankees are still only two games back, there are still over 100 games left in the season and the Mets are most likely still the Mets…we hope.
